Stump grinding cost: what sets the price

Updated · Cost guide by TreeRemovalServices.net

Short answer

Stump grinding is commonly priced by stump diameter at ground level, with adjustments for hard wood, surface roots, access, and how deep you want it ground. Hauling the chips away and backfilling with soil are often extra. Several stumps in one visit usually cost less per stump.

Measure your stump before calling

Most companies ask for the diameter at ground level, across the widest point, including the flare where roots spread out. Measure in inches with a tape. Note how far the stump is from the nearest gate or driveway, the gate width, and whether there's a slope, fence or garden bed next to it. Photos with a tape measure in the frame get you more accurate quotes.

Cost drivers

  • Diameter at ground level (the most common pricing basis)
  • Surface roots to be ground along their length
  • Access: gate width, slopes, and distance from the truck
  • Depth, since deeper grinding for replanting or hardscape takes longer
  • Cleanup: chip removal, topsoil and seed
  • Minimum charges for a single small stump

Reading a stump grinding quote

Two quotes for the same stump can differ because they describe different work. Check each one for:

  • How the stump was measured: across the top cut, or at ground level including the root flare. Ground-level measurements are larger and more honest.
  • Grinding depth in inches. Six inches is enough for grass; replanting or laying pavers takes more.
  • Surface roots: whether visible roots running across the lawn are included, and how far out from the stump.
  • Chips: left in the hole, spread, or hauled away.
  • Backfill and seed: included, extra, or not offered.
  • Utility locating: whether the company waits for the 811 ticket to clear, and who marks private lines like irrigation and invisible fences.

Grinding vs. full stump removal

Excavating a stump with its main roots involves heavy equipment and a large hole to fill, and it typically costs more. It's usually reserved for construction sites, where footings or slabs need clean soil. For lawns and beds, grinding is almost always the better value. The difference between grinding and full stump removal decides which line item you need.

Common questions

Is stump grinding cheaper when done with tree removal?

Often, because the crew and equipment are already on site. Ask for it as a line item on the removal quote.

Why did my stump quote come in higher than a neighbor's?

Usually diameter, measured at ground level including the root flare rather than across the cut top; surface roots that need grinding along their length; and access. A stump behind a narrow gate or on a slope needs a smaller machine and more time.

Do I need to call 811 before stump grinding?

Yes. Grinding goes below grade, so buried utilities should be marked first. It's free. Private lines like irrigation and invisible pet fences aren't marked, so flag those yourself.
