Frequently asked questions

Service-specific questions live on each service page. These are the general ones.

Deciding what to do

Should I remove a tree or just trim it?

If the problem is limited to specific branches, like deadwood, clearance or one weak limb, pruning is usually enough. Removal makes sense when the trunk, roots or most of the crown are failing. See tree trimming and signs a tree is dangerous.

Is it better to remove a tree in winter or summer?

For many deciduous trees, late winter is ideal: trees are dormant and lighter, and frozen ground in cold climates protects lawns. Dead or dangerous trees shouldn't wait for a season.

Can I remove a tree myself?

Small trees that can fall in a clear, open area can be a DIY job for experienced chainsaw users with protective gear. Anything near a house, fence or wires, anything requiring climbing, or anything dead or storm-damaged belongs with professionals.

Neighbors, insurance and rules

My neighbor's tree hangs over my yard. What can I do?

In many states you may trim overhanging branches back to the property line at your own expense, without harming the tree or entering their property. Talk to your neighbor first. See who pays when a tree falls.

Who owns the tree between the sidewalk and the street?

Often the city. Many cities own and manage street trees in the right-of-way and require permission for any work on them. New York City, Minneapolis, Denver and Houston are examples.

About this site

Is TreeRemovalServices.net a tree company?

No. We're an independent information and referral service. Calls are routed to independent local tree-service companies, which quote and perform the work. See how it works.

Does calling commit me to hiring anyone?

No. Calling connects you with a provider; whether you hire them is your decision. Providers set their own prices, so ask what's included before agreeing to work.

Why doesn't your site list prices?

Because honest national prices don't exist for tree work, and published averages disagree widely. We explain what drives price and how to compare quotes. See the cost guides.

Why isn't my state or city covered yet?

We only publish a local guide when we've researched local conditions and rules well enough to say something specific. You can still call from anywhere in the U.S.; provider availability varies by area.

Need help with a tree?

Call to speak with a local tree-service provider about removal, trimming, stumps or storm damage. Describe the tree and what it's near, and they'll explain the next step.
